Cryptographic Multilinear Maps

Luca joined SP2 in September 2017. Prior to that, he obtained my Master’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Luxembourg.

Luca is widely interested in cryptography and especially in understanding how mathematical constructions can serve for security purposes in cryptographic applications. More precisely, he likes working with computational number theory and studying its relations to different areas of computational sciences, such as cryptography.

Luca’s PhD topic is situated between Cryptography and Number Theory, where he is supervised by Prof. Jean-Sébastien Coron and Prof. Gabor Wiese.

During his PhD, Luca mainly focuses on the so-called “cryptographic multilinear maps”: these form a quite recent topic among cryptographers and are obtaining more and more attention. He is largely interested in this topic, since the constructions often stem from purely mathematical problems and serve for very concrete practical purposes. To mention one example, these “maps” can for instance be used to instantiate a secure communication between a large community of people (a.k.a. multiparty key exchange). However, it turns out that the existence, resp. the known constructions of these “maps” are yet poorly understood, which makes the topic relevant for a lot of further investigation.

Luca has more goals that he wants to achieve during these years: From the scientific point of view, he mainly aims at deepening his knowledge about cryptographic schemes involving “multilinear maps” and understanding how (possibly new) interactions from number theory can contribute in the development of this area. More generally, another of his goals during these years is to improve his scientific communication skills, and meeting many researchers from diverse fields is a big opportunity.
